They met as freshmen in the UCLA dorms—just two students living on the same floor. Many shared memories and years later, Megan and Arnie found themselves planning not one, but two different ceremonies for an American-Indian Fusion wedding in Maui. “We chose Maui because Megan’s family has been visiting the island for years, making it a place full of cherished memories,” Arnie shared. With the destination set, the couple worked with wedding planner, Ali Thorstad of Kin Event Studio, to find the perfect venues for their multicultural celebration.
“We loved the Olowalu Plantation House because of its natural beauty, serene atmosphere, and location on the island,” they said of their American ceremony venue. On the other hand, they opted for the Hindu ceremony to be at the Westin, where the majority of guests were staying.
Planning a destination wedding with two distinct ceremonies required careful coordination. Megan and Arnie did one pre-wedding site visit for food and drink tastings. “Megan also did a separate visit for her hair and makeup trial, as well as to meet with the florist and finalize rentals.”“Our planner, Ali, was a lifesaver,” Megan admits. “Her vendor connections and hands-on approach made all the difference.”
The Hindu ceremony kicked off their wedding festivities with vibrant energy. “For our Hindu ceremony and welcome party,” the bride says, “we embraced bright colors in both the florals and decor, creating a lively atmosphere. Guests dressed in traditional Indian attire, adding to the colorful vibe, and we served Indian-inspired bites.” This first ceremony “followed traditional Gujarati customs,” honoring Arnie’s heritage. The following day brought their American ceremony at Olowalu, featuring a completely different aesthetic. “For our American ceremony and reception, we opted for a refined, tropical aesthetic with organic florals in neutral, maize, and green tones, paired with natural wood and earthy textures.”
Throughout both celebrations, thoughtful details made the days uniquely theirs. “Personal touches included handwritten notes for each guest, family wedding photos, and a special moment during dinner where married couples danced to their first dance songs.”
“Without the destination element, our wedding would have been more condensed, with less time for guests to connect,” Megan reflects. “The magic of the day would have remained, however, regardless of the location.”
Their advice to other couples navigating the wedding planning process comes from experience:
“Remember to have fun with the process! Trust your team, lean into the celebration, and focus on what makes you both happy,” they insist. “At the end of the day, it’s about creating memories and enjoying the time with your partner and loved ones.”
